Stop School Overcrowding -- Support Quality Learning Space
McLean High School Modular Classroom Complex -- The process appears underway to add a Modular Classroom Complex to the McLean High School campus. There is $2 million in the November bond issue for the "Relocation of 1 Modular Addition".
In addition to the bond money, neighborhoods surrounding the high school received certified letters in July laying out the plan. The proposal is to install a 37,000 square foot modular complex on the site where 14 trailer classes now sit on the southwest side of the campus.

The design firm's letter and plan map are BELOW. There is no time frame on installation of the complex. The location is substantially different from an earlier proposal which called for the complex to be sited on the practice softball field directly behind the trailer class park.

The school system has typically included modular square footage as actual building space and not "temporary" space like trailer classes.
The modular would only replace current trailers and not add to permanent, protected quality learning space that is part of the school building. At this point it is impossible to know what FCPS has planned because it has not provided any information to parents or the community concerning their plans for overcrowding at McLean High School.

Superintendent Scott Braband wrote to McSPaCES members in the spring and said a modular complex might not be necessary if a boundary adjustment at McLean High School successfully moved enough students.

He wrote: "We recognize the concerns expressed by many regarding the ongoing capacity challenges at McLean High School. My office is working with the School Board to address boundary issues in a comprehensive manner across the district along with our existing boundary policy. Boundary guideline revisions are being discussed and, if approved, could provide capacity relief through a boundary adjustment.
The proposed modular building for McLean High School, which could be installed sometime in 2020, may not be needed if revised boundary guidelines can be established." READ LETTER

The School Board approved an amendment in September that instructs school staff to begin a study to determine a boundary adjustment between McLean and Langley high schools. The size, timing and area of a boundary adjustment would be researched by staff and approved by the school board. READ MORE

McLean High needs permanent, protected learning space that is part of the main building. Help us spread the word that McLean High's overcrowding is getting worse and there is no real solution from the school system.
A modular class complex at Cooper Middle School. McLean High could have a similar 14 class modular brought in to replace trailers.
