School Board Approves McLean/Langley Boundary Study
Study Could be Completed for 2020-2021 School Year

The FCPS School Board has approved a narrowly-tailored proposal to begin a school boundary adjustment study between McLean and Langley high schools.

The proposal’s author, Dranesville School Board member Janie Strauss, said the language will instruct school system staff to immediately begin studying a boundary adjustment between McLean High School -- now at 118 percent capacity -- and Langley High School -- which is at 84 percent capacity.

Strauss said that school staff would study the overcrowding issue and recommend the size, scope and timing of a boundary adjustment between the two schools. The community will be involved in the discussions and have a say in the decisions before the school board approves any adjustment.

During discussion on the proposal, school staff said a plan could be possibly be in place for the 2020-2021 school year.  The proposal passed 9 to 1 with one abstention.

According to the FCPS comprehensive planning document, known as the Capital Improvement Program (CIP), a permanent building addition or “capacity enhancement” is still an option for McLean. But because there is available capacity at Langley, a boundary change will be undertaken first.

By 2023 McLean High School will be 500 students above its design capacity.  Currently it is 300 students overcapacity with 18 trailer classes.

The school system sees a boundary adjustment a first step to overcrowding relief.  McSPaCES wants the school system to also pursue permanent, protected, quality learning space added to McLean High School.  Visit us on Facebook for the latest news and updates.
