FCPS Letter -- November 24, 2020

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

We are continuing the boundary adjustment process for McLean High School and Langley High School. Thank you to everyone who attended the boundary scope meetings last school year. We received helpful feedback from the community and it has been posted online.

As the result of your feedback, the Fairfax County School Board approved expanding the boundary scope to include the boundaries for Longfellow Middle School and Cooper Middle School as well as McLean High School and Langley High School.

The next step in the process is to hold a virtual boundary study meeting. FCPS staff will present information and provide options for the community to consider. After the presentation, community members will work in virtual breakout rooms to share feedback on those options. The feedback will be collected and shared with the School Board.

The virtual boundary study meeting will be held on Monday, December 7 at 6:30 p.m. To join the meeting, please use this link:

To provide capacity relief to McLean High School, a modular unit with 12 classrooms and restroom facilities has been placed at the school and will be ready to move into in late December. It is replacing trailers that were being used at the school.

For more information about boundary adjustments, the process is outlined in FCPS Policy 8130 and FCPS Regulation 8130.9.

We appreciate your patience and understanding during this process.

Sincerely,

Dear Parents and Guardians of Students in the Langley & McLean Pyramids,

Thank you to all of those who were able to attend last week’s community meetings on the proposed boundary adjustment for McLean High School. We received valuable feedback from the community and have posted it on the FCPS website (please see link below).

https://www.fcps.edu/about-fcps/facilities-planning-future/school-boundary-adjustments/mclean-high-school-proposed

These boundary scope meetings were just the first part of the boundary adjustment process. FCPS staff will review the community feedback from last week’s meetings and develop a number of options for your consideration.

The next step in this process will be to hold boundary study meetings at which various boundary adjustment options will be presented to the community.  These meetings will take place this spring.  As soon as the meetings are scheduled, we will notify you as to the locations, dates, and times.  At these meetings we will again ask for your feedback on the proposed options. After we collect the feedback, staff will form a recommendation to be sent to the School Board. There will then be a public hearing scheduled on the proposed boundary adjustment recommendation before the School Board takes action.

Again, we very much appreciate all the feedback we have received thus far and we look forward to continuing the partnership and the dialogue on the proposed boundary adjustment as we look to find a solution that is beneficial for all stakeholders.

Thank you for your support.

Sincerely,

Douglas A. Tyson

FCPS Letter to Parents and Community

November 19, 2019

Dear Parents and Guardians:

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is considering a boundary adjustment to provide capacity relief to McLean High School. Currently, McLean HS has more than 2,350 students in a building with design capacity of 1,993 students. Enrollment at McLean HS is projected to increase in the next five years.

Langley High School, which is close in proximity to McLean HS, recently completed a renovation that increased its design capacity to 2,370 students. Current enrollment at Langley is 1,972. Enrollment at Langley HS is projected to remain the same or decrease in the next five years. FCPS is not planning to recommend moving students out of Langley HS as part of this boundary adjustment.

FCPS is considering recommending that the School Board approve a boundary adjustment to move some McLean High School students to Langley High School. Some students who currently attend McLean HS could be reassigned from McLean HS to Langley HS, if the boundary adjustment is approved.

Two community meetings are scheduled in December. No decisions will be made at these meetings. The purpose of the meetings is to provide information to the community and receive community input via small group work.

Boundary Adjustment Process

The process for a standard boundary adjustment is outlined in FCPS Regulation 8130.9

  • Boundary scope meetings are the first step in the process. During the scope, consideration is given as to areas should be considered in a boundary adjustment.

  • Boundary study meetings are the second step in the process. During the study, possible boundary change options are offered for consideration.

  • After the community has had boundary scope and boundary study meetings, the School Board is informed of the boundary change options, holds a public hearing, and then votes at a School Board meeting.

Parents and guardians are invited to attend a boundary scope meeting to learn about the process, background information, possible scenarios, and work in small groups to provide feedback to staff about what schools should be considered in the boundary study. Two scope meetings are scheduled. The same information will be presented to the community at both meetings. Please join us at the meeting that works best for your calendar.

Both meetings will be held in the cafeterias.

Community Meetings Format

FCPS staff will present information and scenarios for consideration on how to reduce McLean HS enrollment by moving some students to Langley HS. After the presentation, community members will work in small groups to discuss the information and provide feedback. If community members have questions, the appropriate staff person will address their question at the table.

The community feedback from the boundary scope meetings will be collected and used to develop options. The options will be presented to the community at boundary study meetings in the Spring. Additional feedback will be collected at the boundary study meetings and used to provide a recommendation to the School Board. The School Board will hold a public hearing on the proposed boundary adjustment prior to voting at a School Board meeting.

We look forward to seeing you soon and gaining your input.

Sincerely,
